In 2011, Rent was revived off-Broadway for 18 months at New World Stages (Stage 1). It opened August 11, 2011, and closed on September 9, 2012. The production was directed by Rent's original director Michael Greif.
- This is the first New York Revival of the show since the original production closed less than three years earlier.
- The reinvention did not please the critics, who complained that the new actors did not have a feel for the characters they were playing and it made the show feel contrived.
