Idina Kim Menzel (born Idina Kim Mentzel on May 30, 1971) is an American actress, singer and songwriter. She rose to prominence for her performance as Maureen Johnson in the Original Broadway Cast of Rent, a role which she reprised in the 2005 Film Adaption.

  • She was friends with fellow actor Adam Pascal before they worked together in Rent. She also worked with him in the 2013 Broadway musical, If/Then.
  • In 1995, Menzel auditioned for Rent, which became her first professional theater job and her Broadway debut.
  • She went on to play lead roles, as Elphaba In Wicked, Queen Elsa in Frozen, and Elizabeth in If/Then.
  • For her performance as Maureen Johnson in the original cast of the musical, Menzel received a Tony nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
  • Menzel married actor Taye Diggs, her Rent co-star, on January 11, 2003. They are now divorced.
  • While filming the "Over the Moon" scene for the 2005 Film adaption, Idina Menzel sang "Over The Moon" live, rather than lip-syncing it.
